Wow…first of all anon, I think you need to re-read the interview because no where in that article (or the video of it) did she appear ungrateful or come across as anything but thankful for the opportunity she has been given.
Kat has been one of the biggest supporters of the show and has always defended it.
When asked if they told her about Bonnie’s death in advance and how she felt about it, she responded:
“I knew…but I’m not emotionally attached to the characters I’m assigned to play, the fans are. But I’m there to do my job and go home… and it doesn’t matter because I’ve done my job and I’m happy with the work I’ve done and I’d still be grateful for it.”
In what way could anything she said be viewed as “ungrateful”? She constantly thanks the show and it’s producers for giving her the part. She’s even said that she was broke and that the show was like winning the lottery for her because it allowed her to do what she loves as well as ensure she could pay for herself.
She was talking about her ability to distance herself from her character emotionally because that’s what actors do, especially on teen shows when their character can be killed off at any time. She understands that the fans care about Bonnie but she’s not as attached because at the end of the day it is work for her.
I’m sure she loves parts of her character and likes playing her in certain situations.
To be honest, even if she said she disliked her character, I wouldn’t blame her because the writers have seriously underused and mistreated Bonnie.
She’s a plot device, she doesn’t get as many love interests as Caroline & Elena when she is just as beautiful physically and personality wise as both of them. Her one actual love interest (Jeremy) cheated on her with a ghost. Her other ones have either been killed within a couple of episodes (Luka, Ben) or just completely disappeared (Jamie) with no explanation.
I mean, I’m a Delena shipper, but even I can see the chemistry between Kat & Ian is there and Bamon shippers have been royally fucked over because Bamon was a great pairing in the books. And Julie’s comment about them having “too much chemistry” is just royally idiotic. There is no such thing as too much chemistry when it comes to pairings.
I would rather watch a Elena/Damon/Bonnie love triangle with actual chemistry between all the actors than a forced Stefan/Elena/Damon love triangle that most people hate and a lot of people think lack chemistry between a certain pairing (Stefan & Elena, I am looking at you).
She isn’t given story lines outside of fighting the big bad whereas every other character has two or three separate SL’s going on at once. Finding her mother was used as a way for Elena to discover more about her doppelganger heritage & as a trigger to drive another wedge between Defan, Delena & Stelena, when it should have been about Bonnie.
Then when her mother was turned, it was more about Elena’s struggle to repair her friendships and hold her life together when it should have been about Bonnie grieving. It could have even shown how close Bonnie & Caroline’s friendship was but, again, their conversation focused on Elena.
Don’t get me wrong, I adore Elena and will stan her until my last breath, and I understand the show revolves around her, but Bonnie should be a strong supporting character and instead she’s used as a get out of jail free card every time someone’s in danger.
And the collective fandom hate for her is just…wow…I do not understand. If it wasn’t for Bonnie every single character would be dead by now. People should be worshiping Bonnie because if it wasn’t for her all their favourites wouldn’t exist.
Kat didn’t make Bonnie an “awful” character, the writers did. Kat is the reason many of us love Bonnie and Bonnie is a fantastic character when you delve deeper and don’t just see her as the witch who saves everyone and has a hatred (a very justifiable hatred btw, you know, remember that time Damon got her Grams killed) of vampires.
I don’t blame her for wanting to leave a long time ago. Her character is the most hated and the most crapped on character on the show.
She has never bad mouthed the show. She may have joked around about the writing and pointed out the stupidity of some aspects of the writing. Paul Wesley does that all the time but no one gives him shit about it and says he’s being ungrateful and disrespectful. The fandom praises him for it and thanks him for being “the voice of the fandom”.
The misogynistic bias of this fandom stinks. It’s fine for Paul or Ian or Matt or any of the others to express their negative opinions of certain characters or aspects of the show but if Kat or Nina do it they are being spoilt and stuck up and ungrateful.
Not to mention the blatant racism rampant both in the fandom and, to an extent, on the show. All the witches are black. All the underused characters are black. All the semi important but bad characters that pose a threat which are killed off and defeated; black.
Whereas the main big bad that should have been killed ages ago (who is white) is fawned over and kept on because “he’s hot” and “adorable” in interviews (nothing against JoMo before anyone even thinks of going there). Klaus needed to die. Klaus should have died. I don’t care how much he’s loved, Bonnie should have got the spin off, not The Originals.
Not to mention the fact that it was pretty canon that all witches were black then we were told of the most powerful witch and she was, wait for it, WHITE (Ester)!!
And none of the actors have ever been anything but polite and respectful to their fans, especially Kat. Kat is one of the actors who most interacts with her fans and is always willing to attend conventions and signings (you know, when she actually gets invited).
She’s also got a music career outside of TVD and is not as dependent on the show as some of the other actors.
The next time you want to bring hate into my ask box remember that I am a Bonnie stan and that I will defend every single actor on that show from fandom fuckery like yours.
The only thing you will ever succeed in doing is making yourself look like an ignorant prat.
